Penglai Pavilion
Penglai Pavilion was first built in the sixth year of Jiayou of the Northern Song (1061) and is ranked with the Yellow Crane Tower, Yueyang Tower and Pavilion of Prince Teng as one of China's four great towers. The pavilion sits on the summit of Danya Hill above the sea, looking like a fairyland when cloud and mist wrap it. Highlights include the main pavilion, the Tianhou Palace, Penglai Water City and Tianheng Hill. Tip: in summer there is a chance of seeing a mirage. Practical info: located at 7 Yingbin Road, Penglai District, Yantai, Shandong Province; ticket ¥100; opening hours 07:30–17:30. Best season: summer (Jun–Sep) is for escaping the heat and watching the sea; autumn (Sep–Oct) brings the fragrance of apples and plump, sweet seafood. Combine with Changdao (Miaodao Islands), the Zhangyu Wine Culture Museum and Yangma Island for a half- or full-day itinerary. Check the day's opening and booking policy before you go, and allow enough time.
