Yaoli Ancient Town

Yaoli Ancient Town

Recommend 4.4 / 5

Yaoli was anciently written with the characters for 'kiln village', a name it took from the many kilns here since the Song and Yuan dynasties. Forest coverage in the town exceeds 86.3%, and it is a Chinese Historical and Cultural Town and a national key scenic area; ancient kilns and water-mill remains survive around Raonan, and Ming and Qing shops line both banks of the Yao River. The Yaoli scenic area also takes in the Gaoling porcelain-clay mine site and the ancient Dongbu wharf: the 'binary formula' of adding Gaoling clay to porcelain stone appeared here more than seven hundred years ago, making it possible to fire large vessels at high temperature, and the mineralogical term kaolin comes from the name of Gaoling mountain. In July 2026, the 'Jingdezhen handmade porcelain industry remains' were inscribed on the World Heritage list as 'one town, four districts', and the Gaoling site is among them; the town also preserves the site of the Yaoli reorganisation of the New Fourth Army, led by Chen Yi in January 1938. Highlights include the Ming and Qing old street, the Raonan ancient kiln site and tea culture experiences. Tip: it is about 50 km from the city; hiring a car is recommended. Practical info: located at Yaoli Town, Fuliang County, Jingdezhen, Jiangxi; free entry (combo ticket for some sights ¥150); opening hours 08:00–17:30.
