History & Culture: Tianjin rose through grain transport on the Grand Canal and the salt trade. A garrison was established and the city walled in the early Ming, and it has long been a north–south thoroughfare where merchants gathered. As a treaty port in modern times it left a great deal of Western architecture, creating a cityscape where East and West, old and new, blend. Tianjin is famous as a hometown of folk performing arts, and xiangsheng crosstalk and kuaiban clapper talk are close to people's hearts. Folk arts such as Yangliuqing New Year paintings and Clay Figure Zhang painted sculpture are renowned nationwide. The villas of the Five Great Avenues and the Italian Style Area carry memories of modern history, while Ancient Culture Street preserves Tianjin's folk customs. The Hai River runs through the city with a captivating night view, and the Tianjin Eye Ferris wheel has become a new landmark. The city offers both the everyday flavours of mahua and baozi and the bold character of dock culture, and it is warm, humorous and full of life.
Geography: Tianjin lies in the northeast of the North China Plain where the five main tributaries of the Hai River meet, facing the Bohai Sea to the east, and has a warm-temperate, semi-humid monsoon climate. As a municipality directly under the central government, Tianjin's urban space, rivers and climate have shaped one another into a compact, multi-centred city. Autumn (September–November) is crisp and clear; spring (April–May) is also pleasant. Natural and cultural sights are fairly concentrated, so a one- or two-day itinerary by area works well. Light, vegetation and water levels change with the seasons; check the weather and official notices before setting out. Roads and railways are the main connections, and the main sights can be linked from the city or county town. In the mountains watch altitude and changing weather, and around rivers and lakes watch water levels and flood season.
Highlights: Wander Ancient Culture Street for Tianjin folk customs, stroll the Five Great Avenues for architecture from around the world, ride the Tianjin Eye for night views over the city and taste authentic Tianjin snacks. Core sights include Ancient Culture Street, the Five Great Avenues, the Tianjin Eye and Panshan Scenic Area. They cover history, nature and city life and can be combined freely. Pair the main sights with nearby streets, museums or food streets for a half- or full-day route. If time allows, slow down and leave room for walking and rest. First-time visitors can start with the most representative sights, then add museums, old streets or natural areas as time allows.
Food Culture: Tianjin snacks are famous nationwide: Goubuli baozi have thin skins and generous fillings, jianbing guozi are crisp and tasty, Erduoyan zhagao are crisp outside and soft within, and Shibajie mahua are crisp and sweet.
