City Intro

History & Culture: Xiangxi Prefecture lies in northwestern Hunan and is home to Tujia and Miao communities; Fenghuang Ancient Town, Furong Town and Aizhai Bridge together make a destination where mountain scenery and ethnic culture coexist. Xiangxi is where Tujia and Miao cultures meet: hand-waving dances, Miao silverwork, and the literature and art of Shen Congwen and Huang Yongyu together form the cultural imagination of “mysterious Xiangxi”. The Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture lies in Hunan Province and has formed a distinct urban memory through regional history and cultural exchange. From ancient settlements to the modern city, city walls, lanes, temples and guild halls record historical layers from different periods. Today, museums, historic districts and local festivals still make the city's historical thread legible.

Geography: The Wuling Mountains run in every direction, and the Youshui and Tuo rivers have cut gorges and river bends; Fenghuang, Furong Town and Dehang represent, respectively, the ancient town, the waterfall town and the Miao village gorge. The Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture lies in Hunan Province, where landforms, rivers and climate together shape the city's spatial pattern. April–October is best; Fenghuang and Furong Town are most comfortable in spring and autumn; summers are rainy, so watch your footing in the gorges. Natural and cultural landscapes within the prefecture are fairly concentrated, making one- or two-day itineraries by area practical. Light, vegetation and water levels change the look of the landscape with the seasons; check the weather and scenic-area notices before setting out. Transport within the prefecture is mainly by road and rail, and the main sights can be linked from the city or county towns.

Highlights: Wander Fenghuang Ancient Town, stay in Furong Town to see the waterfall, walk across Aizhai Bridge, and enter Dehang Miao Village for songs and dances. Core sights include Fenghuang Ancient Town, Furong Town, Aizhai Bridge and Dehang Miao Village. These sights cover different facets such as history, nature and city life, and can be combined freely according to interest. It is worth linking the core sights with nearby streets, museums or food streets into a half-day or full-day itinerary. If time allows, slow the pace and leave room for walking and rest for a fuller experience. First-time visitors can start with the most representative core sights, then add museums, old streets or natural scenery as time allows. Local food is part of the itinerary too, so save mealtimes for long-established restaurants or local markets.

Food Culture: Blood-rice duck, Xiangxi shefan, ginger candy and Xiangxi cured meat: sour-spicy and smoky flavours are the foundation of Xiangxi taste.
